What is Time Travel?
You can not answer this correctly unless you can understand Time.
You can simply say it is travelling forwards or backwards in Time,
But what does that actually mean?
If I just answered this simply, then I would say we are all moving forwards in Time, and we can't do anything much about it.
But on a deeper level I know we are travelling in many dimensions of Time.
This on its own is not scientific, so I must explain what I mean by Time, before I can discuss Time Travel.
What do I think Time is?
I've answered this in another Tea Break Book, but to summarise it, it is merely the measurement of change of the quanta of 'Real' space. [The 'APE's].
'Real' space is a space volume that is not abstract (another Tea Break Book).
This change of the quanta of space is actually changes in all dimensions of each quantum of space (this is a complex volume, that moves in these Time dimensions). Therefore these subatomic changes in each quantum move forwards, backwards, left, right, up, down, in and out simultaneously in Time at this level. In so doing they change their macroscopic dimensions. They do this because all the macroscopic dimensions (and subatomic dimensions) are all linked together (including Time).
There is No such thing as independent dimensions.
These subatomic times of all the quanta create a localised ³Time in our space, which is just the overall measurement of Time that we detect and sense.
In this way, we only detect a forward passage of Time because we are detecting an overall change of space, a change is a change, and because of the structure and mechanism of the quanta themselves it can't be detected as going backwards, unless all the quanta reverse simultaneously, which they can't do because they never stop moving (so that they can reverse).
[They have an intrinsic momentum that can not be stopped].
If something gets bigger it is moving forwards in Time, if it is getting smaller it is moving forwards in Time. Movement at our scale of forwards and backwards are all positive movements, as are moving to the left or to the right, or up and down. All are positive movements, meaning forwards in Time at our scale and sense. A negative movement at our scale is just a relative movement with reference to ourselves where we pick an arbitrary abstract zero point. E.g. We can say where I am standing is the zero point, we can therefore move in a positive direction forwards, then we can move in a negative movement backwards, even beyond our starting point and therefore we are moving backwards in a negative way. Time is not linear in this way at our scale, so a clock ticks forwards as Time moves forwards, it would tick backwards if you travelled back in Time in this fashion. Because it is not independent of space, Time is relative to the movement of the space that is localised around you.
So True Time Travel in this sense is not possible, but relative Time Travel is possible.
How is this achieved?
Time is localised and relative, so we can all have a similar clock that ticks off seconds. When we move with this localised space we take our clocks with us, and for each of us a second is a second, but dependent on the speed that each space is moving at our scale relative to each other, the clocks tick off time at different rates to this relative movement. I.e. The faster you move the slower your clock ticks.
So by simply moving fast (near the speed of light to make a significant difference) you can travel forwards in Time to someone else's future (or the future that you would have had, had you stayed behind).
Now how can you Travel backwards in Time?
Simply moving slower, in other words make them go faster (again near the speed of light). In this way you can travel back to the past that you would have had, had you stayed with them.
In this way you can Travel forwards in Time or backwards in Time relative to the others. But notice your Time does not change, it keeps on going forwards.
[Just like the TARDIS, if you are a fan of Dr Who].
You should also notice you can't go forwards in time and kill your future self, because you left that localised Space and Time. In the same way you can't go back and kill your grandfather (or yourself), because he did not move forwards in his localised space and Time so you could meet him in his past. Had he done so, you would not have been born in this past that he left behind.
In other words there is no father son grandfather paradox possible. I.e. There is only one 'Existance' of your localised space, it is not duplicated as you move forwards or backwards in Time and space, (you take it with you).

The Momentum of Time.
To explain further why it is not possible to truly go backwards in Time I have defined something I call the 'momentum of time'.
The mechanism is explained in another Tea Break Book but not defined as such. I will explain it a little differently here.
Imagine all of space is made of bicycle chains.
If you look at one bicycle chain and you pedal your bicycle the chain will move forwards in a circle, think of this as moving forwards in time.
If you could pedal backwards the chain will move in the opposite direction again in a circle, think of this as moving backwards in time.
Now imagine you could only pedal forwards and (secondary) time is just the chain turning, the chain would have a momentum (we will call this a positive forwards momentum of time). Now it does not matter which direction you point your bicycle, forwards or backwards or to the side or up a hill or down a hill, the chain will always turn in the same direction around the circle (positive momentum of time). In other words from your perspective at your higher dimensions, the direction you travel has no bearing to the positive momentum of the chain(s).
If momentum is conserved at the level of the chain (and it is), time can never stop, and therefore can never change into a negative momentum, where the chain spins in the opposite direction.
At our (higher) level we measure momentum as the net sum of all the chains momentums, (the bicycles don't exist). Time travel backwards can't exist because of this 'momentum of time'.
Imagine the chains were cows, that never stop moving. They all move forwards with respect of themselves, they never run backwards. We only see the herd as one, not the individual cows. If the herd from our perspective is standing still (because we can't see the individual cows within it, they could be moving chaotically or they could be running in circles), we say it has no momentum. [But it will have internal momentum, we call potential energy, equal to the sum of the cows within it]. If the herd moves in one direction it will have a momentum at our level, this would be equal to its kinetic energy. The actual cows in the herd do not all move in the same direction, some will be going backwards, some to the side etc. So if you imagine time as the herd going back in time, they would have to run backwards individually, which they can't do because it is in their nature to only travel forwards, they all have a 'positive momentum forwards only', the same principle as 'the momentum of time'.
